First Crossing - Greece to Italy

Our last stop in Greece was the island of Kefalonia. On the 22nd August and in good spirits we set off for our first overnighter at 03:00. The 185nm trip would take roughly 36 hours and the weather forecast was good; winds up to 20 knots and max. 2m swell. During the first leg of the journey we had nearly no wind, so we motored out until there was no more land in sight. Luke caught an 8kg bluefin tuna at about 18:00, which gave us a few decent meals.

We decided that Luke and Matteo should take the night shift, as the most wind (20 knots) was forecasted for around 01:00.

Just before they went to bed the wind started to pick-up and we set the sails and reefed as much as possible, just to be on the safe side.

The wind continued to pick-up, until Vera and Viola found themselves in steady 27 knot winds with gusts up to 32 knots. The swell started to get steeper and rose to about 3-4m, with some crests washing over Carpe Diem and drenching the poor crew. At around 01:00 Luke & Matteo got up and took the mainsail down completely, as we were hitting boat speeds of up to 14 knots…instead of a preferable 10 knots.

At about 03:00 the wind picked up to a steady 35 knots, with gusts up to 40 knots and 5m swell with breaking crests. Luke turned on the engines and steered Carpe Diem into the wind and waves at a slight angle, in order to ride up and over the waves as apposed to surfing down them. This tactic was certainly rougher but provided better safety & control.

This continued well after the next shift change at around 05:00, when Matteo went in for a rest and Vera came out. Luke remained at the helm until about 08:00.

With day light peering over the horizon, no improvement in the weather was to be seen - in fact it was the opposite; There was more stormy weather in sight and exactly in the direction we needed to go. At this point we could see land but decided to take a detour of about 2 hours as to avoid the lightning storm ahead. This paid off, as we were greeted by a slightly rainy but more importantly storm-free Italian coast.

Quite tired but pleased with our accomplishment, we checked into Rochella Marina at around 10:00, had some lunch and all went to sleep for a few hours.

Überfahrt

Unser letztes Ziel in Griechenland vor der Überfahrt nach Italien, war die Insel Kefalonia. Guten Mutes starteten wir am 22.08.2016 um 03:00 Uhr morgens unsere erste längere Überfahrt. Die Wettervorhersage war gutes Wetter mit Wind bis zu 25 Knoten. Das Wetter blieb schön zu Beginn und die See ruhig, wir hatten fast kein Wind und tuckerten gemächlich den ganzen Tag über das Meer. Vor dem Nachtessen fing Luke noch einen 8 Kg Blauflossen Tunfisch, welcher später köstliche Mahlzeiten bescherte.

Wir vereinbarten, dass Luke und Matteo schlafen gehen und Vera und Viola die erste Wache bis ca. Mitternacht übernahmen, denn es war nach Mitternacht mehr Wind zu erwarten. Es kam Wind auf, bevor Luke und Matteo sich schlafen legten, somit setzten wir die Segel im dritten Reff. Der Wind frischte immer weiter auf, 27 Knoten, mit Böen bis zu 32 Knoten waren zu verzeichnen und die Wellen wurden immer höher und spritzten über das Boot.

Als dann um ca. 01:00 Uhr Schichtwechsel anstand, mussten die Segel runter genommen werden. Es wurde immer heftiger, mit Böen bis zu 40 Knoten. Ohne Ölzeug war es nicht mehr auszuhalten. Was auch die Mägen mitbekamen und sich zu drehen begannen. Im Inneren des Bootes wurde alles hin- und her geworfen und Carpe Diem stieg und fiel über ca. 5 Meter Wellen. Die Spitzengeschwindigkeit betrug 14 Knoten. Dies hielt weiter an, bis zum nächsten Schichtwechsel um ca. 05:00 Uhr. Wobei Luke am Steuer blieb und Matteo von Vera abgelöst wurde. Luke schlief jeweils für kurze Zeit im nassen Cockpit. In der Ferne und doch immer näher kommend waren noch dunklere Wolken und auch starke Blitze in Sicht. Vera und Luke versuchten dies soweit möglich zu umfahren, glücklicherweise löste es sich dann aber auf. Dazu ist zu nennen, das Cape Diem über keinen Blitzableiter verfügt. Bis zum Hafen ging es dann noch eine Weile so weiter und Carpe Diem surfte mit den Wellen. Wir waren sehr froh um die Mithilfe von Matteo und Viola und alle waren wir erleichtert, als wir im sicheren Hafen von Roccella um ca. 13:00 Uhr am nächsten Tag einliefen. Kurz nach dem Anlegen fielen alle erschöpft ins Bett und in Tiefschlaf.
